Joyography Workshop Overview

The last workshop was a huge success! Each of the girls took amazing pictures during the workshop and are diligently working on editing them.

We had the most adorable little models come, here we are in action.

As soon as all the girls have sent me their favorites from the model shoots I will be posting their images. Here are just a few that I took during the workshop.

After the girls, we had some hilarious, fun, handsome boys come model for us. They were a hoot!

I enjoy taking extended family pictures, but sometimes due to the large group size, I don't have time to take pictures that really capture the personalities of the people I'm working with. My last session working with an extended family was great (see below). It is great to document who is in your family, but pictures like these really capture the essence of who they are.

Before attending the Joy-ography Workshop I was frustrated that despite my basic knowledge of f-stops, shutter speeds and the like, my photos still didn't turn out as I wanted. The occasional good shots I got were due more to luck than skill. My camera exasperated me, intimidated me even.

Then I got to go to this great workshop. I left inspired, exhilarated, CONFIDENT. I learned how to work with ISO settings to control exposure. This has greatly improved my ability to take indoor shots using existing light without relying on the camera's auto-flash. I also learned specific manual settings for action shots and portraits, among many more useful tips.

Perhaps the best part of the workshop was the chance to take pictures of a real family, and then to receive feedback on my shots. All this in one highly enjoyable day.

Before Joy-ography I felt like my camera was the photographer. Now I am. And I tell you, that's much more fun.

Thanks again for all that you taught me. I've had a lot of comments on my photography since the workshop and all the credit should defiantly go to the Joy-ography workshop. I have also had a few requests to take family photos and did my first unofficial photo shoot with a friend over at Gardner Village a few weeks ago.

I can not say enough good things about my experience with Joyography! In a short time I learned how to control my camera and get the photos I want. Before Joyography I had little knowledge of how my camera worked and was at the mercy of the automatic settings. Marisa made it easy to learn how to manipulate the camera and make it work so that I love the end result. Before the workshop I felt like my photos never reflected reality--they always seemed gray, dark, and muted. My photos now show colors and light the the way that I see them. Thanks to Joyography I am now able to take photographs that capture the stories I want to tell.

This family was an absolute delight to photograph. Just look at this picture, these kids love each other! And the entire family is beautiful. They were all so polite and well behaved as well. And the dad still smiled even after I accidentally made him sit in a huge red ant hill. Shortly after they all got a good laugh as a snake crossed my path and I flailed about and screamed at the top of my lungs.

Step back ladies, this cutie is going on a 2 year mission!

Meet little Elsie, isn't she just a doll? She wasn't a huge fan of me or my camera, but I had been warned that she was more of a serious baby. Plus, this girl loves to walk. I would just plop myself in one spot, let her do her walking and capture her being her cute little self when she walked by.


It's really sad when the 1 year old you are photographing has better shoes than you. Aren't those great shoes?

She is definately a daddy's girl, and daddy's girl needed a break from being the model.

What to Wear

One of the most stressful parts of getting your portraits taken is knowing what to wear. So we've compiled a list of some rules we like to follow. But don't forget that these aren't hard and fast because rules were made to be broken!

Rule No. 1: BE COMFORTABLE!

If your kids hate their sweater and say it's making them itchy- they aren't going to be happy at the session. Or if you can't lift your arms up the whole way - it's probably not a good choice. So, when choosing clothes the first thing to consider is - am I comfortable in this? Will I be cold/hot/itchy? Or will I be comfortable/relaxed/confident?

Rule No. 2: DON'T BE AFRAID OF COLOR!

Remember the traditional idea of wearing white shirts and kacki pants? Well, that's old news - color is in, baby! And it's in because it's exciting, interesting, fun, eye-catching goodness. So, don't be afraid of stripes, dots, & bright colors - play em up!

Rule No. 3 - DON'T BE TOO MATCHY-MATCHY

You could use the same color and pattern on your sofa, your curtains, and your walls but you don't because that would be boring. Well, it's boring in pictures too! Mix it up - maybe choose one dominant color or pattern and then add complimentary patterns and colors. Or don't match at all - just have fun with your colors!

Rule No. 4 - ADD TEXTURE!

While too many accessories can be distracting - just the right amount can be fabulous! This is the time to pull out those adorable bloomers you got or those sparkly shoes. The camera loves texture so even a soft sweater or waffle knit shirt adds interest. And don't forget those hot pink cowgirl boots, soft scarves and those adorable berets!

When It's Time to Change, You've Got to Rearrange

With that said, Moondoggie Photography is making a few changes of it's own, and there is no better time than at the beginning of the year. Not only for tax reasons, but it seems that everyone is inspired and ready to push forward full speed ahead.

Megan and I have been friends since I first met her at a birthday party 20 years ago when I first moved to Texas. We have had a lot of the same interests over the years, (surprisingly enough, never in the same guy) but photography has been a common interest over the past 6 or more years. Megan was in Texas, I in Utah. We both started our businesses at the same time with the same equipment, and with daily phone calls we shared all our photography secrets and business ideas. When Megan moved to Utah, it just seemed right that we would abandon our old businesses and start one together.

The journey building Moondoggie Photography has been amazing! We have both had a great time and learned a lot in the process. But, it is time for a change. We found that coordinating the business aspects, managing a website and blog, managing the finances, and driving an hour round trip between our homes took away from the time we could be talking about how to be better photographers. We lost all that we loved about our businesses because we were "coordinating".

Marisa will be keeping Moondoggie Photography, and Megan will be reinstating Megan Knorpp Photography. We are happy to say that Megan and I agreed that there won't be any awkwardness between the two of us. So, if you are a previous client of mine, and want to give Megan's a try, I won't be offended, and visa versa.

Megan and I are still calling each other every day exchanging tips and ideas. My phone rang today, and my son Reece said, "it is either dad, or Megan", it was Megan. We are still planning on doing weddings together as well. So if you book a wedding with one of us, you can pretty much plan on seeing the other. Most importantly, we are still working vigorously on our Joyography Workshop! We will be giving away a scholarship to our workshop, so start thinking of all the reasons YOU deserve it.

Things naturally slow down here this time of year because of the temperature and the snow but for those who still want to brave the elements there are a few rewards...

First off, the snow is a great reflector and brightens everything up!

And you don't have to fight the crowds! We saw a few photographers but otherwise the park was EMPTY!

At the end of the session the wind was really picking up and when we were about done I saw this wall and knew it had to be mine. Or at least in some of my pictures. I love it, don't you?

Melissa's Bridals - Utah Valley Wedding Photographer

First off - it was about 14 degrees with the wind chill the afternoon we met for Melissa's Bridals but she was such a trooper. And I'm so glad because even though it was wicked cold the light was pretty and she was beautiful. We also did some groom shots and couple shots since we aren't going to have as much time on their wedding day.

Also, this couple was soo in love. They didn't need any direction -they just exuded love and attraction.

During the Thanksgiving holiday I was also excited to take my sister-in-law's family portraits. She had been driving all over Boise trying to find a good location before I got there and she succeeded in finding THE most beautiful barn - EVER!

And even though it was cold (am I sensing a trend in the latest sessions?) we got there right at that amazing hour when the sun is setting and the light is so golden and beautiful - ripe for light flares!

And here is her cute oldest son. He's such a fun nephew - always asking questions and telling stories. I have a soft spot in my heart for talkers since I can never stop talking myself!

And here is her adorable little girl. She has the tiniest little munchkin voice that never gets old to hear. It's like little tinkling bells. I love it!

More of that beautiful red barn. The owners were so kind to let us come and take pictures there. It really was like the barn of my dreams. Thanks goodness my brother-in-law Bryce has guts of steel because I was too timid to want to go to someone's back door(they weren't answering the front door) to ask for permission!

And here the the adorable baby of the family. Such a handsome boy and always so smiley and happy. What a doll. And how about those eyes, eh?

The Arntsen Family - Utah Valley Family Photography

This is my cool cousin and his family. He lives in Boise and I was there for the Thanksgiving holiday. I realized on my way to see him and to take these that I hadn't seen him in almost a dozen years. First of all, we should see each other more often and secondly, I don't feel old enough to have not seen someone in that long that I saw in college! Anyhow, even though it was a chilly day in Boise we found this cool deserted farm and the sun was golden. I love them!

I always wanted a redhead - I love them!

And this little gal was just the funniest thing! She was soo expressive and silly plus really cute. Everything a photographer dreams of!

And her older sister was so sweet. Right away I could tell she is one of those children that is a blessing to their mom because they are so sweet and helpful.

And here we have the oldest son - who was also a lot of fun. Don't you love that middle shot of him? So cute and genuine.

I was loving the light so much I made mom and dad get over into it. Isn't it pretty?

Also, my cousin's father-in-law was in town for the holiday so he came along. I was a big supporter of it because with such a distimct cool look like he's got I was itching to take some images of him.

So thanks, Peder & Samantha - I'm so glad we could meet up! Let's not let another dozen years pass before we do it again.

The best compliment a photographer can get is repeat business. And here is an old friend who I got to photograph for her senior portraits, engagements, bridals, and now a family portrait with her husband's family. I love it when that happens - especially with someone so photogenic!

First off, I love silly face portraits - they NEVER get old to me!

When I heard that my little niece was going to be driving 1000 miles out to Utah (her parents drove, not her), I called my brother and sister-in-law to schedule a time for their photo shoot. It was a little chilly and windy, and being the protective parents of a first child, we didn't have much time to shoot. Luckily we didn't need a whole lot of time to get some beautiful stuff!

Moondoggie Presents the Joy-ography Workshop for "Wannabe" Photographers

We are so to announce something that has been years in the making - the Joy-ography Workshop.

What is the Joy-ography Workshop?

It's a intensive one day crash course in the basics of photography taught by both Megan Knorpp and Marisa Johnson of Moondoggie Photography. Our goal is to take you from the girl next door to an artist!

What will take place there?

We're going to have a ball! Not only will be teach you how to use the gear you currently have, we'll provide models and shoot next to you so you can really try it out. We'll give you the information you need to stop being a slave to your camera and start taking control and creating art! We'll also teach you the basics of editing your photos with Photoshop. We're also going to be giving away some door prizes which we'll be announcing in the coming weeks!

Who should come?

Anyone who has dreamed of becoming a photographer but doesn't know how to do it, amateur photographers who are having a hard time getting off the ground, moms who want to capture the joy of their children through photography, or anyone who wants to know how to make every picture they take beautiful!

Where are we doing this?

We are really happy that we've reserved Star Mill for the entire day. If you haven't been there it's a historic mill near downtown American Fork, Utah and it's home to some really great buildings and colors. We'll be staying warm and cozy in the morning at the cottage there and then be moving outside in the afternoon for our shooting.

When is this?

Our first workshop is going to be held February 6, 2010 from 9 AM to 5 PM. It's going to be a long, crazy day so be ready to become the photographer you always dreamed of being!

WHY JOY-OGRAPHY: The birth of a workshop.

About 8 years ago my sister and I were talking and she said she had bought the cutest matching outfits for her daughters and since I had a nice camera she wondered if I could take them. I had a pentax point and shoot that my parents had bought me my senior year in high school and it took fairly good pictures so I said yes. These are a few of the pictures from that day. I don't remember my theories exactly that day except there were a lot of pretty flowers and once I had seen a photo where the flowers kind of framed the image so I tried to copy that.

This photo below in particular I was proud of. I didn't know how it happened but I liked how the flowers had kind of filled with light and appeared to be glowing. I knew that something photographic had happened but I couldn't tell you what and I couldn't recreate it and that bothered me.

So for the next year little while I took more pictures of my sister and her family. And then friends started asking for me to do it too. I still left my camera completely on auto but tried to do some different angles and things. And it usually worked out ok. And slowly my business grew. Eventually I had a portfolio I would carry around with me with prices listed in the back. And I was a professional - meaning people payed me. Meanwhile my best friend from high school, Marisa, was going through the same thing. We'd call each other on the phone and commiserate about our failed sessions or the stress of being a professional but only slightly knowing what we were doing.

And the learning curve was steep. We both had entire sessions come back from the lab(remember these were the days of film) with nothing but black. It was terrible. We really had no idea what had gone wrong so every time we picked up my pictures we were was filled with dread.

I remember once a client who was unhappy with the pictures I took looked at a photo in my portfolio and said, "I want a picture like that one - how did you do that?" And I had no idea how I did it. It was just a stroke of luck - as were nearly all of my good images. I'd take as many pictures as I could and hope that at least one picture per roll of film was good. In that three years I went through 6 different cameras. I didn't know what to get so I just kept changing gear hoping it would be right. I asked professionals who were better than me and what gear they used then I got it - without having any idea how to use it. I remember in particular shooting a wedding two days before the birth of my second son - huge with child and three cameras hanging around my neck. I had been "professional" for two years and though my composition wasn't bad still most of my good images were due to luck.

Though very slowly I did get better. I read every photography book I could get my hands on. Often skipping entire chapters because I didn't understand what they were saying. I scoured others websites trying to recreate what they had taken. It was a process that took years. But it didn't need to take that long.

A couple of years ago I had a good friend who wanted to get into photography and asked me for help. And though I had done the same thing for others over the years this time I had gotten to a point where I really knew what to tell her. I helped her choose her gear and gave her some "assignments" and I was amazed how quickly she improved. She talked me a lot as well as others professionals. Her example made me realize that if I had just been given the right tools and the right direction my growth would have been so much quicker. I wouldn't have spent years relying on luck and my camera's auto mode to get a good image. The trick was having someone who could help you understand what all of those chapters in those photography books meant, someone who could tell you why your images didn't work, someone who could tell you which camera to leave hanging around my neck. I love to teach so excited to realize that I could be that person for others now. And thus...the joy-ography workshop was born.

Like a lot of local bands sound like several talented people playing instruments at the same time - but his band sounds like music - like really good music. I'm obviously a proud sister. Well, after forgetting my camera at the last show and hating myself the whole time, I made up for it by bringing it this past weekend at a really great show...here goes!

This is Sadye Price & she played first. And she is super good. Like, I could listen to her sweet songs all day. And isn't she a doll?

This was a house show and it was packed - but that was good because it was super cold outside so all of those warm bodies made it nice and cozy inside. And you can see my husband in the bottom right corner.

And here they are rockin out - I love the motion blur going on here...

And here's my cute brother. He is the youngest of 6 kids and so he's gotten A LOT of advice from a bunch of overprotective siblings - but he's taken it in stride and become the nicest boy who also happens to play the guitar really really well.

And here's Seth and he is also ubertalented. He has amazing songwriting ability. I love it. And once again notice the cool motion blur...

And Drew Danburry finished the night out but we had to leave before he played. I had heard his music before but never live so I was bummed but we have four kids at home and had to get back to the babysitter. He is rumored to be the nicest guy on the face of the planet.

All in all it was a great time and it brought me back to my college days. And I was fun to take some pictures that were a little different than what I normally do. Thanks, Weston!

The Wingers are some of my favorite people. We moved into their neighborhood and they helped us feel so welcome. And I just love their kids. They are the kind of kids that you don't mind if they stay over all day playing with your kids - and if you are a mom you know that is saying A LOT! And they were real troopers for the session. The weather may appear beautiful in these images but it was cold cold cold and the wind was blowing like crazy. Luckily they were great sports about it so we were able to get some beautiful images!

What to Wear - Winter Edition

We get a lot of questions on what to wear for sessions and during the colder seasons it can be even trickier than normal. First off, read the What to Wear Guide for basic pointers. And when it's cold out instead of piling on big ski coats and hoods - wear lots of layers. Try thermal underwear and clothing that lends itself to that style. So with that in mind we came up with a few montages to give you some ideas. Almost all of these clothes can be found at The Gap and while we don't expect you to recreate the outfits below we thought it would be a good place to start for inspiration!

And don't be afraid to bring some thermoses full of hot cocoa for sipping in between shots!

I was able to take these pictures on the most perfect weekend. It started raining about an hour before I was going to leave for this session, and I just didn't think it was going to work out. I called the family and they wanted to risk it and hope the weather would clear up. I'm so glad they were up for the adventure. The leaves were amazing, and it only rained on us once for a few minutes.

I love the different personalities showing in this picture.

Whenever Autumn comes around I constantly feel an underlying anxiety that I am missing the changing of the leaves. That I'll be busy and going about my everyday stuff and then one day all of the leaves will be on the ground and I'll have missed that week of splendid color. This time I was determined not to. And I got to take some pictures during it as well. Lucky me!

And this last one has a story - and I just love stories...after Stephanie and Adam's first date Stephanie had a dream that they had a thumb war together and she said she couldn't stop thinking about it/him after that. I'm glad we got to make her random and yet unforgettable dream come true!
